PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: DECEMBER, 2018

by on December 30, 2018

It’s that time of year again and I am writing my last President’s Message for 2018. At this exceptionally busy time of year, I hope that all of you will take the time to reflect on this year’s accomplishments and spend time with family and friends.

I have been speaking of the evolution of the court reporting profession. As technology marches ahead, professions like ours are affected greatly. The changes that occur are not temporary but last until the next great discovery forces a change. That is where we, as court reporters, are today. I have stated before, there has never been a better time to be a digital court reporter and transcriber. I still believe that and AAERT is working to ensure that.

Our annual conference, held this past June in Providence, Rhode Island was a great success. My greatest takeaway was confirmation that the steno community is looking to digital reporting very seriously. The growing shortage of stenotype reporters is the catalyst that makes for change to digital reporting imminent.

Our leadership is aggressively responding to this paradigm shift in a positive, supportive way. Communication between our committee chairs, schools, business owners, and vendors of court reporting technology is on the rise. In every instance, the benefits of digital court reporting and AAERT are  passed along.

Paramount to the evolution to digital court reporting is the building of trust. For those who are looking to us for solutions, they need to understand all of the resources that AAERT and our members have to offer. For the past 26 years, your leadership has built a rock-solid foundation for the digital court reporting profession. As a result, numbers are on the rise in all categories. Membership continues to grow and has enormous potential for continued growth. There are more certified members than ever before. The number of schools that are AAERT approved or requesting approval is also increasing. Our Government Relations Committee continues to build the resources that help protect our profession in the states and courts that threaten us.

Lastly, I am very excited to announce that we have contracted with a new testing vendor. Under the new testing procedure, reporters and transcribers will be capable of testing from the comfort of their home and on their own equipment. This ease of access to our certification process has been several years in the making. With each step, the goal of bringing our tests to you has improved. Thanks to Mike Tannen T-TEAM Management and the Certification Committee for making this a reality.

Looking ahead to 2019, AAERT will be launching our new certification testing. Our Best Practices Guide has been thoroughly digested, dissected, revised, and improved to today’s standards. I want all of you to keep in mind a few things. Consider becoming part of the leadership for your profession. We need strong leaders with vision and a desire to continue to improve digital court reporting. We have our Executive Forum scheduled for March 29th and 30th. We encourage all firm owners and schools to attend. For the general membership, we have our annual conference this June 20th to 22nd in Louisville, Kentucky.

I hope you have had a prosperous and productive 2018. From our family to yours, have a happy and safe holiday season.

Geoffrey L. Hunt, President AAERT
